Raising a glass to local real ale

COTSWOLD publicans are brewing up a message for the area’s beer drinkers – support your local real ale.

The Baker’s Arms at Broad Campden, near Chipping Campden, is among 11 Cotswold pubs supporting Locale, a national initiative by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).

This scheme promotes pubs that stock real ale brewed in their local area and has been launched to meet growing consumer demand for quality local produce and an increased awareness of green issues.

CAMRA’s Nottingham branch originally created it to support traditional brewing in Nottinghamshire following the demise of local brewer Hardy and Handsons.

Sally Mayo, the Baker’s Arms’ landlady, said getting ale from local breweries was environmentally-friendly because the lorries carrying it did not have far to travel.

She said: “Sometimes it is easier to speak to local breweries because they are from your area and, as they are only a small brewery, in some cases you are speaking directly to the brewer.

“They can keep you in touch with changes.

“It is just to support local people.”

The Mousetrap at Bourton, the Horse and Groom at Bourton-on-the-Hill, the Eight Bells at Chipping Campden and the Fox at Broadwell, near Stow, are among the other Cotswold pubs taking part.
