Sailing club closes down

EVESHAM has witnessed the end of an era with the closure of the town’s sailing club which never fully recovered from the devastating floods in 2007.

Commodore John Pickford made the announcement this week with the club just three years away from its 50th year. Although sailing at the club continued after the floods, the clubhouse became uninsurable due to subsidence.

Membership dwindled and the cost of the clubhouse, which had to be made flood-resistant, escalated to the point of being unviable.

“It seems unlikely that a permanent club will ever be established on the flood plain in Evesham so this is truly the end of an era. The committee would like to thank both past and present members for their support,” said Mr Pickford.

Meanwhile, there will be a second a blow to Evesham after the Journal learnt Alworths on Bridge Street – which moved into the old Woolworths premises in 2009 – is closing down.
