Michelle heads for South Africa
Michelle McDermott
Michelle McDermott

AN adventurous Tewkesbury woman is preparing for a trip to Africa to raise money for a charity close to her heart.

Michelle McDermott, aged 29, will travel to South Africa in November where she will help build a new school and a football pitch in a remote village. The trip has been arranged through the Bobby Moore Foundation but Michelle will be raising funds for Cancer Research UK.

Michelle has chosen to support the cancer charity due to the excellent support her 79-year-old grandmother received when she was diagnosed with the disease. Her target is to raise £4,000 and although only £500 is in the kitty so far, she hopes to smash that total.

Michelle said: "This is the first time I have tried something like this and I am very excited about it. I am not used to camping out in the middle of nowhere and not having access to comforts like my bed make up and my straighteners!

"I wanted to do something for Cancer Research and I came across this trip to Africa and I liked the sound of it so I signed on. I think there are around 40 if us going over.

"I am doing this to raise money but my inspiration for the trip is my nan. She is amazing and so strong. She has been receving chemotherapy and is recovering at the moment."
