Concerns over placing advertising signs on busy roundabout

PLANS to position four advertising boards on a busy roundabout have been met with concern.

The pole-mounted signs would be placed on Powick island, near Worcester, with one facing each entering road under plans submitted by Malvern Hills District Council's head of policy and governance John Williams.

However, Powick Parish Council has raised concerns about the possible impact the 100cm by 50cm notices could have on passing motorists.

The council's chairman Andy Lamb feels there are already enough advertising signs on or around the island, including cars and vans featuring their own notices, and the proposal goes against their work to de-clutter the area.

Cllr Lamb added: "We have spent quite some time and effort trying to reduce the signage that can distract people around that roundabout."

He also indicated the advertising income would go to the district council even though the signs would sit within their parish.

Worcestershire County Council's network control manager, Sally Everest, said: "This permission does not authorise the applicant to carry out works within the publicly maintained highway since such works can only be carried out by the county council’s approved contractor following the issue of a license under Section 184 and 278 of the Highways Act, 1980.

She added the district council needed to contact her with regard to the issue of the necessary license authorising the access works to be carried out.

The district council's Northern Area Development Management Committee has deferred its decision on the application to allow the parish council to submit any comments.

It will be raised again at their next meeting on Wednesday, March 5 at the council chamber, Avenue Road, Malvern.
