Open target is on for The New One

NAUNTON trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies is targeting more Grade Two glory with The New One after his impressive performance at Cheltenham Racecourse’s The Showcase.

The Cotswold handler is eyeing the £25,000 Grade Two Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle on November 18 during The Open at Cheltenham.

The New One landed the Grade Two John Smith’s Champion Bumper at Aintree in April and returned with a 26-length demolition of his rivals on his hurdling debut at Newton Abbot on October 1.

On his latest start, the fouryear- old justified favouritism with a taking display in the Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle. The grandson of King’s Theatre scored by twoand- three-quarter lengths from the highly-regarded Village Vic with a further 21 lengths back to third.

Twiston-Davies, whose son Sam was the jockey, said: “The New One has come out of his last race brilliantly — he is very laid-back and you wouldn’t know he’s had a race.

“His performance at Cheltenham was very good. He was on the bridle coming to the last and just had to be shaken up on the run-in and went away well.

“He has all the right attributes and travels well.

“He wasn’t spectacular, which we would like, but it was a very good performance overall. I think one day he will get three miles as he is stoutly bred but I think, for the moment, we will stick to two-and-a-half.”

Twiston-Davies had a double at Cheltenham when 7-2 favourite Hunters Lodge won the Talk To Victor Amateur Riders’ Handicap Chase.

Meanwhile, the 55-year-old warned it could be “quite tight”

to get his 2010 Gold Cup winner Imperial Commander ready for the Betfair Chase at Haydock on November 24.

The horse has not been seen in public since pulling up with a broken blood vessel in 2011 when trying to defend his title.

He missed last season with a tendon injury but returned to the Gloucestershire handler in September having done plenty of road work in Ireland.
