Barnett calls for promotion push
5:30pm Thursday 6th December 2012 in Sport
MORETON Rangers manager Gary Barnett wants his team to turn their good form into a promotion push.
The London Road side are riding the crest of a wave having thrashed high-ranked Cheltenham Saracens Reserves 8-2 to reach the last eight of the Gloucestershire FA Senior Amateur Cup.
Victories over Chalford (3-2) and Stroud (2-0) have also lifted them to fourth in Gloucestershire Northern Senior League Division Two.
Former Kidderminster Harriers midfielder Barnett is now looking for his players to continue their efforts when they host Real Whaddon on Saturday (2pm).
He said: “Last weekend was probably our best performance in a long, long time.
“They were a good side, three leagues above us, but we got all parts of the game right. It was a very good all-round team performance.
“Real Whaddon are a very tough side and there’s no doubt it will be a good test.
“We are being very steady in the league and I am hoping now that we can have a consistent run and last Saturday is the level we want to reach for the rest of the season.
“If we can I am hoping we will be in the shake-up for promotion.”
Barnett puts Moreton’s recent success down to having a settled side and also having harmony within the club.
The manager added: “A fit squad and players being available is massive and we have had that for the last two or three weeks, hence the results.
“We have improved as a team and a club, there’s no doubt about that.
“We have got a good reserve side as well and we are all training together like a proper football club.”
- Bourton Rovers visit Stroud (2pm) on Saturday aiming to put a 9-2 drubbing at the hands of Hardwicke behind them.
The 11th-placed side had previously drawn 2-2 at Abbeymead Rovers before the heavy defeat to the league leaders at Rissington Road.
