NICKIE Maddaford got off to a great start in her bid to make the summer semifinals with her youngest horse.

Six-year-old Lou Bega I won his novice class at Abbey Dressage, Tewkesbury, with 67.5 per cent.

The five points gained put him on track towards the 20 required to qualify and Maddaford, based at Broadland Equestrian near Broadway, is confident of progress.

She said: “It was his first attempt at the level so we’re all delighted. I have owned Leo, as he is known at home, for a year and he’s showing himself to be a good member of the team.

“He has qualified for the winter semi-finals in the novice freestyle to music which will be a good education for him.”

Another of Maddaford’s horses, Alfiero, will also do the novice and elementary freestyle to music on February 14.
