On-fire Bredon in cup semis in style
3:20pm Thursday 31st January 2013 in Sport
BREDON Star conquered boggy conditions to beat Birmingham Solihull 24-0 at home in the North Midlands Under 16s Cup quarterfinals.
After a night of torrential rain, the match survived a pitch inspection and Bredon were a little more organised, particularly at the breakdown, in the early stages.
When a penalty was awarded to Bredon 30 metres out after 10 minutes, Tim Fenney stepped up to successfully kick for goal.
The pack worked well, seeming to take great delight in plunging into the mud, and several scrums were won against the head.
Bredon’s forwards also starred in the line-outs but they really made their mark in the driving mauls.
Three converted tries and a clean sheet led the under 16s through comfortably into the semi-finals.
The under 15s won 25-10 in Chaddesley Corbett against a strong Droitwich Spa side, opening the scoring with a converted try following a quick tap penalty five metres out.
Bredon used the strong wind to their advantage with a kicking game and added a penalty to make it 10-0.
The visitors’ pack were a real handful but Spa did pull back an unconverted try after several missed tackles.
Bredon used their scrum as a springboard and powerful running led to further tries with the hosts only able to add one more.
Meanwhile, despite the wet weather, the firsts were also in action but lost 22-11 at home to Ashley Down Old Boys in Gloucester Division Two.
Star are bottom of the table after a seven-point deduction and are two behind Cheltenham Civil Service ahead of Saturday’s rearranged home game with Cotham Park (2.15pm).
