Beattie is on song in victory for Littleton
1:20pm Thursday 21st February 2013 in Sport
LITTLETON kept up the pressure at the top of the Athium Midland Combination Premier Division with a superb 1-0 win at third placed Atherstone Town.
The hosts were left feeling hard done by as they had the majority of the play but could not turn it into goals.
Littleton, now just one point off leaders Bromsgrove Sporting with five games in hand, were without a recognised striker but they took the lead on two minutes.
From a corner on the left, David Edwards headed the ball on and Tim Beattie prodded home from close range.
Atherstone attacked in waves and went close when Joe Boggild crashed a header against the bar.
They continued to press but keeper Jack Dell and his back four held firm.
Littleton almost scored again on the half-hour mark when a 45-yard Simon Fitter free-kick hit the bar.
The visitors hit the woodwork again at the start of the second period through Martin Slavin’s cross-shot.
But Atherstone returned to the attack and Dell saved well from Gregg Webb.
As the game wore on, home tempers frayed and, during eight minutes of injury-time, they had an impassioned penalty plea turned down.
Littleton host Southam on Saturday (3pm).
