Bretforton in title triumph with fine show

BRETFORTON secured the West Club’s Women’s League North Division title with a 6-0 thrashing of bottom-ofthe- table Yate seconds.

They should be playing in Premier Division ‘2A’ next season after confirming top spot with two games to spare.

Julie Hall opened the scoring in the first-half when she latched onto a cross from Liz Murray-White and coolly slipped the ball home on her reverse stick.

Not to be outdone, Deb Slatter, continuing her brilliant form, connected with a pass from Sarah Hall to sweep home Bret’s second.

The first period ended as it began when Julie Hall connected with a Lisa Workman pass to deflect the ball past the Yate keeper.

Bret made life tricky for themselves with some illdiscipline but settled down well after a calming team talk at the break.

Yate tried for a comeback but some of their attacking play was, at best, agricultural and Bretforton’s brickwall defence could not be broken down.

The hosts continued to press and the pressure told with a flurry of short corners.

Hayley Whitehouse scored her first goal of the game when she neatly side-stepped the advancing Yate runner and slotted the ball home perfectly.

Another short corner and another goal followed, this time it was Murray-White’s turn to get on the scoresheet with a fierce strike.

Bret were in cruise control and Whitehouse grabbed her second when she ran through the defence and unleashed an unstoppable shot.

Yate pressed again and conjured up a few shots on goal that were blocked by Bret’s defence and keeper.

A great performance and deserved victory sealed the title against a Yate side who are always a tricky proposition.

Bret’s joint players-of-thematch were Daisy Wheeler and Whitehouse.

The Vale side finish their season with a tough trip to fourth-placed Leominster on Saturday and a home finale against Bristol University seconds the following weekend.

In their 16 games this season, Bret have won all apart from one draw and a defeat, scoring 59 goals and conceding just 14.
