A golden show for African

AFRICAN Gold showed big potential after beating all apart from hot favourite At Fishers Cross in the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham Festival.

A bumper winner and unbeaten in four starts over hurdles, the five-year-old 9-2 shot, trained by Naunton’s Nigel Twiston-Davies, lost to the 11-8 favourite by fourand- a-half lengths.

Twiston-Davies said: “He’s going to be exciting over fences next season.”

Changing Times was a shock third for Twiston- Davies in the Jewson Novices’ Chase despite being way down the betting at 100-1.

His jockey son Sam, who also rode African Gold, said: “He’s a horse who wants further and he was staying on really well at the end.”

The stable’s other third place arrived courtesy of Double Ross (14-1) in the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle under Adam Wedge.
