Shipston birthday marked in style
4:10pm Friday 16th August 2013 in Sport
THE Shipston club marked the end of their 60th anniversary celebrations with an introduction to angling day.
More than 25 children and parents attended their lakes at Aston Magna and all the youngsters caught fish.
Club chairman Mike Wells said: “We’d booked people into two-hour slots and, when the first two hours was up, no-one left because they were having such a good time.
“Luckily, the club members present just got out more tackle and everyone fished on.”
The introductory day finished three weekends of fun which started with a duck race on the River Stour at Willington.
The main festival weekend followed with a three-day competition at three different venues which organiser Stuart Fleming deservedly won.
Sponsors’ prizes were presented by Shipston mayor Ronnie Murphy who also handed Jan Oakey, of Shipston Home Nursing, with a £251 cheque. Each day was supported by activities at Shipston Sports Club, culminating in a pig roast, barbecue and band on each night.
Wells added: “There is plenty to learn from the events and most of it is positive.
“The most important thing is, within the town, we’ve put the fishing club on the map and hope to have started something which will now develop into an annual event.”
Shipston provide more than 100 local anglers with pleasure angling and over 40 matches a year on various waters.
