THE Worcestershire Cricket Board’s indoor league at Evesham’s county cricket centre began with good wins for Bredon and Feckenham.
Evesham Casuals (98 all out) lost to Bredon (100-4) by two wickets with four balls to spare.
Casuals, made up of Bretforton players, made a smart start with adventurous running between the wickets until the first inevitable mixup came to assist Bredon.
With the score on 19, Pete Cross (9) found he was the only batsman running.
Andy Stanley joined Adrian Witts (37) but, at the end of the fourth over, Evesham were on 38-2 when the former was bowled by Rob Mazonier.
Jamie Clarke (29) added zest but found little further support until Witts returned after retiring and a final flourish looked likely. However, two run-outs brought the innings short with 10 balls remaining.
Bredon lost their first wicket at 13 but Clive Fenny looked comfortable throughout.
On his retirement, Ali Monro (22) and Jamie Diamond (20) made crucial contributions until both were dismissed by Witts (2-18), including a fine one-handed catch by Clarke.
Casuals might just have been back in the game but still needed two wickets to Bredon’s 14 runs. Fenny returned to conclude affairs, ending unbeaten on 35.
In the other league game, Redditch (74 all out) lost to Feckenham (75-5) by one wicket with an over left.
With the exception of Greg Chinn (41), Redditch’s batsmen struggled. Opener Jack Roberson (10) was run out in the second over with the total on 20.
Redditch lost Tom Field in the same over lbw to Luke Jackson, who picked up 3-26.
Runs seemed to dry up and last-man Chinn unexpectedly popped up an easy catch to Ben Adshead on 41, leaving four overs unused.
In reply, Feckenham began without alarm but the start disguised troubles ahead.
Josh Stacey was run-out in the second over and wickets fell fairly regularly after the team were on 39-1.
Adshead (20) was caught behind off Field with the score on 40 but, with luck and generosity in 14 wides, Jackson (17 not out) kept his head as last man to scrape Feckenham home.
The league continues every Tuesday evening until April.
