Second for Pershore swimmers in league meet

PERSHORE Swimming Club grabbed second place behind Redditch in PGL League round one, pushing local rivals Evesham into third.

Despite picking up more than 10 speeding tickets in the development gala, Pershore youngsters battled hard for 140 points with Redditch winning on 148 and Evesham managing 132.

Pershore collected two early speeding tickets before Helena Leach was third in the girls' 12 and under 50-metre backstroke.

Luke Betteridge and Isobel Cumming both finished third in the 11 and under 25m breaststroke.

The team’s first victory came from the boys' 10 and under 4x25m medley relay through Patrick Heeks, Leo Rendall-Baker, Hamish Cross and Jamie Saunders.

The girls' team of Sophie Thomas, Macey French, Alexandra Barry and Caitlin Yates did likewise.

Oliver Smith was third in the boys' nine years 25m freestyle, which was soon followed by first places from Jasmine Hoskins and Calum Sanderson.

Hoskins took the girls' nine years 25m freestyle in 18.53 seconds, while Sanderson won the boys' 13 to 14 years 50m backstroke in 37.17.

Pershore's boys' 12 and under 4x25m medley team of James Thomas, Chris Vizard, William Clarke and Josh Sharratt proved too strong for the opposition.

James Thomas was second in the boys' 11 and under 25m freestyle, while Ellen Cope secured victory in the girls' 11 and under 25m freestyle in 17.22.

Two more speeding tickets followed before Robert Thorner was third in the boys' nine years 25m breaststroke and Lauren Annis won the girls' nine years 25m breaststroke in 24.04.

Josh Lane and Jack Betteridge joined Vizard and Sanderson with victory in the boys' 13 to 14 4x25m medley relay.

The girls' team of Hope Rochell, Hannah Simister, Jasmine Taite and Mia Du Toit were second.

Sharratt was second in the boys' 12 and under 50m breaststroke, newcomer Imogen Harper third in the girls' 11 and under 25m butterfly and William Mullen third in the boys' nine years 25m backstroke.

Jack Betteridge finished second in the boys' 13 to 14 50m breaststroke and Cope third in the girls' 12 and under 50m freestyle, while Hamish Cross and Caitlin Yates grabbed silvers in the 10 and under 25m backstroke.

The boys' 11 and under 4x25m medley team of Ronan Williams, Luke Betty, Heek and Thomas were third.

The mixed nine years 4x25m medley quartet of Mullen, Annis, Thorner and Jasmine Franks managed second.

Sanderson secured his second win in the boys' 13 to 14 50m freestyle in 32.05.

With Pershore down to fourth, Du Toit started the comeback with second in the girls' 13 to 14 50m freestyle and Heeks stormed to victory in the boys' 12 and under 50m butterfly in 39.94 as did Williams in the boys' 11 and under 25m backstroke.

Rebecca Phillips added silver in the girls' 11 and under 25m backstroke and Cameron Leach and Macey French won their 10 and under 25m breaststroke races.

The boys' 13 to 14 4x25m freestyle relay team of Sharratt, Sanderson, Betteridge and Josh Lane won in 59.97, while the girls' team of Hope, Du Toit, Taite and Simister managed third.

Pershore claimed five of the relay events and three second places to pile the pressure on.

Alexandra Barry, Sophie Thomas, Caitlin Yates and Macey French dominated the girls' 10 and under 4x25m freestyle relay.

The mixed nine years team of Robert Thorner, Jasmine Hoskins, Oliver Smith and Tamara Marsden also secured maximum points.

The boys' 12 and under team of Williams, Vizard, Sharratt and Clarke proved too strong before Pershore finished by winning two 10x25m freestyle cannons.
