STOW-on-the-Wold trainer David Bridgwater enjoyed a double at Newton Abbot as a hurdling debutant stole the show.

Jockey Tom Scudamore, who grew up in Condicote, secured a hat-trick of successes — including denying rival Tony McCoy in the opening At The Races Virgin 534 novices’ hurdle.

McCoy’s hopes of reaching Martin Pipe’s phenomenal record of 4,191 career wins were put on hold after Scudamore struck on Bridgwater’s hurdling debutant Collodi (8-1) by a neck.

Bridgwater said of the five-year-old horse: “If he did what he did at home — jump and gallop — he’d win. Thankfully he did.

“He’s one of those horses that everything he does is a forward step.”

McCoy was also out of luck on his three subsequent rides, while Scudamore completed his treble aboard Bridgwater’s Tempuran (7-2) in the concluding SIS Bringing Betting To Life novices’ handicap hurdle by eight lengths.
