Evesham Journal's search for sports champion
12:20pm Monday 18th June 2012 in Sport
THERE is still time to nominate an unsung hero for the Journal Sports Champion Award which will be presented to the winner this month.
We are on the lookout for stars of the Vale sporting scene who deserve recognition for their tireless work which may often get overlooked.
In this exciting sporting year where the London Olympics and Euro 2012 are just two of the major events which will take place — we want people from Evesham, Pershore and the surrounding villages who make a major contribution to sport in the area to be involved as well.
The Sports Champion Award 2012 has been launched for the first time this year and we want to hear from the community to tell us who should win the inaugural prize.
The competition seeks to unearth the Vale’s unsung sporting heroes and pay tribute to those who do the often unseen work which makes a club or team tick.
Those selfless souls who put in the time and effort to go the extra mile for the benefit of others.
This could be the person who washes the kit, mows the pitch, organises fixtures or puts the cones out for a training session.
It is primarily an award for someone whose work is done off the pitch, behind the scenes, who deserves some recognition.
Nominations can be made by emailing news@eveshamjournal.
co.uk or by calling the Journal team on (01905) 742385.
The deadline for nominations is TODAY.
Forms will also be distributed throughout sports clubs in Evesham, Pershore and the surrounding areas.
When a winner is chosen, a presentation will be made by the Mayor of Evesham Robert Raphael at Raphaels Restuarant, Boat Lane, Evesham, on Tuesday, June 26, just days before the Evesham Festival of Sport begins and the Olympic flame is carried through the town.
The Festival of Sport will be opened at noon on Sunday, July 1, at Crown Meadow where a number of events will be taking place throughout the afternoon.
The event continues for a week, coming to an end on July 8 with the Vale 10k race and closing ceremony.
