Henley glory for star pair

First published in Sport

TWO Cotswold oarsmen picked up major honours at a famous English rowing competition.

Richard Watton, of Dumbleton, and Chipping Campden’s Matt Gotrel lifted the Wyfold Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta.

The duo were joined in the successful Nottingham Rowing Club ‘A’ senior coxless four crew by Pete Muhley and Ed Mace on the River Thames in Oxfordshire.

They helped the city side see off ANA RC from Western Australia in the final by two lengths.

Watton, 22, rowed for Great Britain at the European University Championships in Moscow last year and won a men’s four gold at the British competition. Former GB sailor Gotrel, 23, was also a national champion in 2011.

The pair lost in the challenge cup final at Henley last year but went one better this time after defeating Tideway Scullers’ School in the semis.
