National run for teen Toby
12:00pm Sunday 2nd September 2012 in Sport
CHIPPING Campden Bowling Club’s Toby Robinson shocked many on his way to the national under 25s singles championships quarterfinals at Worthing.
After progressing from the Gloucestershire finals, the 18-year-old, of Willersey, pipped Norfolk’s Josh Baxter 21-20 in the first national round.
Robinson stepped up his performance with a superb 21-14 victory over England international Sam Tolchard, of Devon, and a 21-15 win over Yorkshire’s Ben Render.
But the run ended 21-10 at the hands of Northamptonshire’s Callum Height in the quarter-finals.
Robinson’s father Gary said: “He didn’t expect to win a game but did very well.
Toby kept his head when others didn’t as the greens were difficult.”
The teenager now heads to the Isle of Man for a 12- month project with Chipping Campden Baptist Church.
