JOHN Marshall broke the 15-year-old Naunton Downs Golf Club course record for an amateur with a gross 66 in the August Medal.

In ideal conditions, playing off a handicap of two, Marshall did not get off to the best of starts when bogeying the first hole.

The American, who is in the Cotswolds on a twoyear secondment, then had four successive birdies, including the notoriously difficult second hole.

Despite bogeying the eighth and ninth, Marshall played the front nine in 33 shots against the par of 35.

He did not drop a shot on the back nine, which included three birdies, for 33 compared to the par of 36.

The previous record of 67 was held by Andrew Hollingworth for the last 15 years.

Marshall hails from Baltimore and is a regular member of the Naunton Downs ‘A’ team in the NGFL Foursomes League.
