Triathlon GB place for Derek

First published in Sport

VALE veteran Derek Barlow has won a Great Britain place at the European Sprint Triathlon Championships next June.

The Church Lench ace qualified for the big event in Alanya, Turkey, through the Rother Valley Festival.

Representing Absolute Triathlon Club Worcester, Barlow finished second in his 60 to 64 year age group and clocked one hour 32 minutes for the 750-metre swim, 25-kilometre bike section and 5km run.

The bike leg was hilly and testing, while he set a personal best of 23.11 for the run.

Having qualified in June for the World Championships and for the Olympic distance triathlon at Strathclyde three weeks ago, 2012 has been a great season for the 61-year-old.

Barlow said: “I’m looking forward very much to being part of the GB team.”
