EVESHAM maintained their unbeaten start to the season in Midlands Three West (South) with a 32-28 win at Woodrush.

After close early exchanges, good work from Evesham’s back row gave good field position and the ball was spun to Carl Robinson who coolly slotted a drop goal.

Woodrush responded quickly, however, and went over in the corner for an unconverted try.

The end-to-end action continued and a solid scrummage led by the front row of Josh Greatrix, Kerren Lippett and Stock gave a good platform for Sam Garrett to link with Mike Diston who kicked through, finding Stef Lasota to touch down and Evesham regain the lead at 8-5.

Evesham took their foot off the gas and good forward pressure from Woodrush led to a bundled converted score followed by two in quick succession to leave the visitors trailing 22-8.

The second-half began lively for Evesham with the likes of Corbett and Sam Huckvale gaining territory.

This was rewarded as Corbett burst through the centres and, after a quick onetwo with Ben Dziczkaniece, raced away to score under the posts. Diston converted.

Evesham continued their onslaught and good line-out work from the Smart brothers, Stuart and Clive, in the second row gave great field position for Corbett to take it blind and kick inside for Robinson to dive over for his second.

Woodrush upped their game and a stretched Evesham defence fell at the hands of the fly-half who ran in a score of his own.

Once again there was a response and the solid centre partnership of James Bowen and Robinson made ground and it was the latter who offloaded to Darren Hunter returning from a lengthy lay-off to score. Diston converted for 27-25.

Evesham’s concentration lapsed and from the kick-off a penalty was awarded which Woodrush duly converted giving them a point lead with minutes to play.

After reclaiming possession from the kick-off, Evesham played the phases earning penalty opportunities pushed wide by Diston.

Evesham recoverd, however, when Hunter chased a kick over the top for a dramatic late winning score.
