DESCRIPTION

Cruck Cottage is a historically significant 13th century medieval cruck-framed cottage, located in the Thames-side village of Long Wittenham. The Grade II listed thatched cottage is reputed to be the oldest domestic dwelling southern Oxfordshire. The original medieval open hall dates back to the reign of King John, and was subsequently altered and extended in the Tudor period. Over the last two years the cottage has undergone a significant programme of restoration and refurbishment, bringing the building back to its former glory.

The current owners have invested significantly in the building with traditional materials and techniques used throughout the restoration process. Contemporary high-grade fixtures and fittings such as a Worcester-Bosch combination boiler and Jim Lawrence light fittings ensure the cottage is well suited to 21st century living. New electrical and plumbing systems have been installed along with a bespoke kitchen featuring solid oak work surfaces as well as integrated appliances as well as a heritage style bathroom. The ground-floor accommodation comprises of an entrance porch, main sitting room, open hall, kitchen, WC cloakroom and dining room or forth bedroom. The first floor offers three bedrooms and the bathroom. Externally, the building has been repaired using breathable lime mortars, paints and solid English oak with the roof re-thatched in 2015.

Gardens

To the front of the house is a delightful limestone walled garden filled with shrubs, herbs and wild flowers with a mature fig tree on the side wall of the building. At the side there is a drive and stone and timber built garage. To the rear is a charming private cottage garden, with a raised lawn and densely planted borders. There is also small paved area adjacent to the cottage, providing a secluded seating area.
