TEWKESBURY Borough Council has welcomed a new mayor for 2016/17.

Councillor Gill Blackwell was invested as mayor of Tewkesbury borough at a ceremony held at St Andrew's Church in Churchdown on Thursday May 12.

More than 100 guests welcomed the new mayor at the ceremony, including friends and family, as well as local dignitaries.

Cllr Blackwell named her friend, Christine Wray, as her mayoress and her husband, Mike, as her consort. Her chaplain is Reverend Wendy Ruffle of Prior's Park, Tewkesbury.

Cllr Blackwell lives in Churchdown and represents the Hucclecote ward as a borough councillor. She has been a councillor since 2011.

She said: "I am honoured to become the mayor of Tewkesbury Borough for 2016/17 and, over the year ahead, I am looking forward to meeting lots of people who do such wonderful things for our borough. I also hope to help raise the profile of my chosen charities: Winston’s Wish and the Stroke Unit at Gloucester Royal Hospital, and help bring in some much-needed donations."

Councillor Harry Turbyfield was invested as deputy mayor for the year at the same ceremony. His partner, Ruth, is his mayoress.

The mayor's role is to chair council meetings and to lead the council at civic events. The mayor attends a number of community engagements throughout the year.
