STANDING water at Worcestershire County Cricket Club has mostly cleared, raising hope that the ground will be in fit condition for the start of the season.

Last week, the ground was flooded with only a small patch of the outfield not underwater at Blackfinch New Road for the club's press day on Friday.

This created fears that the ground may struggle to host the first home game of the season on Friday April 27 against Nottinghamshire with Kidderminster and the Royal Grammar School in Worcester touted as potential alternatives.

A message on the club's twitter feed said: "The surface water has nearly all gone off the outfield at Blackfinch New Road.

"What a difference a weekend makes."

Work on a £1.2million scheme to prevent flooding on New Road began in January and is expected to last 12 weeks.
