Stourbridge 2, Evesham United 1.

EVESHAM United failed to make progress in the Red Insure Cup last night going out to Stourbridge in the preliminary round.

With an important FA Cup second qualifying round tie at Eastwood Town on Saturday in mind, manager Paul West made sweeping changes, with six players missing that had made the starting line-up against Chesham United three days earlier.

After a blank-first-half that saw United’s Andy Jones and Wayne Daniel go close with headers, it was Evesham who made the breakthrough on 57 minutes.

Lewis Pountney headed Josh Quaynor’s free-kick into the path of Jones who slotted in past keeper Lewis Solly.

The lead lasted 12 minutes.

Poor defending allowed Aaron Drake to drive into the bottom corner and draw the Glassboys level.

Fifteen minutes from time, Stourbridge clinched a home tie against Stourport Swifts in the first round, with the winning goal.

John Griffin got behind the Robins’ back-four to drill home past Nathan Vaughan.

Evesham pressed in the closing stages in an attempt to force extra-time.

Craig Connor had his header touched over by Solly and Daniel rose to head narrowly wide, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Stourbridge from taking their place in the next round.
